Senior Manager Strategy & Product Manager, RUAG MRO International, Simulation & Training

Since January 2016 Jan Uebersax is the Senior Manager Strategy & Product Management in RUAG Defence’ Business Unit Simulation and Training. In this position he is responsible for the development and management of RUAG Defence’s outstanding Simulation and Training product portfolio. Before joining RUAG he gained many years of experience as officer in the Swiss Armed Forces. Below is just a small excerpt from his long career in Simulation and Training.

Colonel GS Jan Uebersax joined the Swiss Armed Forces as a professional officer in January 1992. He graduates in 1997 from General Staff College and worked in different positions at the HQ of the 1stDivision and later in the 2nd Infantry Brigade. He was commander of a motorized infantry company, a light infantry company and of the 3rd Infantry Battalion. 

At the Infantry Training Centre, due to his simulation experience, he worked as project officer for:
•The virtual simulation to train Squad and Platoon Leaders IRIS (1997-1998)
•The Live Simulation Platform SIMUG and later SIM KIUG and the LASSIM family (1999-2008)

In 2006 he was appointed as the Swiss delegate to the NATO Training & Simulation Group (TSWG) that was then part of the NATO Training Group/Army Sub Group (NTG/ASG). The same year he was nominated chairman of the TSWG.

In 2010 he graduated with a MSc in Defence Simulation & Modelling from part of the UK’s Defence Academy at Cranfield University. 2010 also saw his appointment as the Swiss Delegate to the NATO Modelling & Simulation Group (NMSG), bringing the TSWG with a new name under the umbrella of the NMSG. In the same year he started to collaborate with the NATO M&S CoE in Rome.

Between 2009 and 2013 he was the project officer for the Modelling & Simulation Strategy for the Swiss Armed Forces working at the Armed Forces Joint Staff, defining the Simulation Next Generation 2020.
He was promoted in summer 2013 commanding officer of the 2nd Infantry School and was a key user of the simulation he developed over the past years.

Colonel GS Uebersax was the Chief of Staff of the Patrouille des Glaciers, that mythical mountaineering race between Zermatt and Verbier, from 2015 till 2018.
